My son coached a boys basketball team for the church, 5th and 6th grade boys. He doesn't hae children. He doesn't play basketball either. But they called and asked so he said okay. Way more work than he anticipated, and I could tell the last few weeks he really wanted to just quit. But we don't quit. We may not do an activity again once the season is over, but we never, ever quit before the season is over.
So he saw it through to the end. And it wasn't even as if the kids on his team didn't do well. He had the smallest number of players, and a lot of unskilled ones, but he used all the coaching knowledge he had from years of playing lacrosse, and actually had an undefeated season. He couldn't make the "league party" so he decided to have his own end of the season party. So he invited 6 boys and their families to the house. X-box and brownies and cheesy poofs were the main events. He even decided to give the kids certificates of achievement. Of course he didn't think of that until 10 this morning - for a party that started at 2.
One of the dads is a professional photographer and brought cds for each kid with pictures of games and practices he took, and they were fantastic. A few parents stayed and we had a lovely few hours. Son did a small presentation of certificates and pictures, and had something good to say about each kid. He made his momma proud.
we're all glad this season is over, I'm too old to be a team mom again. And basketball season apparently interfers with deer season in our state.
